LinuxDay 2008 at Dornbirn

At the 29 th of November 2008, the Fedora Project was present at the LinuxDay at Dornbirn in Austria. It was the first time the Fedora Project was there and maybe the last time... Timea and I met Gerold after 100 km at a gas station on the highway at 06.30 am. We decided to save some resources and drove together. Also because it's much more comfortable to travel in a new car than in my old one. The planning was very exact. We arrived at 08.00 at Dornbirn. One hour before the opening is way too long to setup a Fedora booth. Normally it takes 5 min or less (see OpenExpo 2008 at Winterthur) ;-) . It was good that we arrived early because this way there was enough time to drink some coffee, go to the bathroom, and chat a little with the booth neighbors. Our neighbors were Gnome, KDE, FOSS-Group, and OLPC. At 09.00 there were no visitors, only staff and project contributor at their tables. OK, Saturday morning is for the most people a day to sleep longer than usual. After some hours I realized that there will never come 1000 visitors. Till noon we had some visitors, around 30. Some take an old Fedora 9 LiveCD to try it out and some where just curious. Claus spoke to some visitors very long and helped them. He was in advance because was the only native speaker. I've had some problems with the understand of the Austria people because for me their language sounds like a strange dialect of Swiss-German. After the clean-up we moved to a restaurant for a dinner and then it was time to say 'Good Bye' and to travel home. Summa summarum, it was good that the Fedora Project was there but the benefit for us was very small due the lack of visitors. The organization team speculated a bit to high with the 1000 visitors for the 10th issue of their fair. I'm looking forward to see some numbers. At the moment I think that there were not more than 200 visitors. The attendance at the talks was very limited too, I counted several times not more than 25 people. Some numbers:

  • 17 hours (from leaving the house till to get back)
  • 500 km per car
  • 2 potential contributors
  • less than 200 visitors
  • a winner aka Gerold
  • and a nice Austrian dinner with some strange cheese smell

Don't worry, that's how the Vorarlberg dialect sounds to most people in Austria as well. ;-)
